Coal train collision

The RACQ-CQ rescue helicopter and crew today attended the site of a devastating accident involving a semi-trailer and a coal train 10 kilometres north of Proserpine at Koolachu Siding.

The driver of the empty coal train , returning from Abbot Point near Bowen, appears to have escaped serious injuries. However, the driver of the semi-trailer, which burst into flames on impact, was found 100 metres away from the scene in the canefields.

It is thought the driver of the coal train realised that the mangled wreckage had the potential to ignite and helped the truck driver from the wreckage.

Initial reports from teh CQ RESCUE crew indicate that the Bundaberg truck driver sustained serious chest injuries. He was transferred by the CQ RESCUE helicopter to Mackay Base Hospital in a critical condition.
